A terrorist was shot dead during an encounter with security forces in the Basantgarh region of Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Thursday. The operation, led jointly by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, is still active as more searches are being carried out in the area.
According to officials, the killed terrorist is said to be a Pakistani national associated with the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed. The Indian Army’s White Knight Corps confirmed the development in a post on social media, stating, “In the ongoing joint operation in Basantgarh, one terrorist has been neutralized. The operation is continuing.”
Security forces began the operation early on Thursday morning after receiving intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the region. Contact was established with the militants shortly after the area was cordoned off.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti, informed the media that the gunfight began in the morning and is still underway. “The situation is under control, and the area is being thoroughly searched,” he added.
Two soldiers were reported to have suffered injuries during the exchange of fire. They were taken to a nearby medical facility and are receiving treatment.
In a separate development, security forces carried out a large-scale mock drill at the Baltal base camp in Ganderbal district on Wednesday. The drill was conducted as part of security preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, which begins on July 3.
The exercise was led by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Ganderbal and included participation from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, NDRF, SDRF, the Indian Army, Health Department, and Fire Services. This coordinated effort aims to ensure the safety of pilgrims during the yatra, given the high security risks associated with such large religious gatherings.
